Vineyard
Situated
on a ridge at 1380 feet above sea level overlooking the Ojai
Valley, Dufau Vineyards produces Ojai Ridge
Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The superior quality of the
vineyard is influenced by both the soil and the climate.
The soils consist
of rocky fractured shale with minimal top soil and deposits
of clay between the fractures. The poor soil and excellent
drainage creates a perfect growing environment for the vines.
The weather is
as unique as the soil with warm summer days and cool evenings
– a microclimate similar to the Napa Valley. In the
summer months, temperatures range from the high 80’s
in the daytime to the mid 60’s at night. In the fall,
average highs are in the 70’s with lows in the 50’s.
The vineyard is located 10 miles from ocean as the crow flies
allowing the dense coastal fog that Californians refer to
as the “June Gloom” to roll into the Ojai Valley.
This marine layer, together with warm summer days and cool
evenings, dramatically influence the development of the grapes,
creating long hang times. This longevity on the vine develops
wonderful characteristics in the wine – deep rich color
with well balanced structure and ripe fruit flavors unique
to Ojai Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
Because of its
location on steep slopes, the Ojai Ridge vineyard is maintained
completely by hand – challenging – but ultimately
producing the highest quality of fruit possible.
